SAN ANTONIO, TX – Feb. 1, 2008 – The official kick-off to the 2008 Go Red for Women campaign began today, Friday, February 1. This day marks National Wear Red Day for Women and asks everyone to show their support of heart disease prevention by sporting red clothing or accessories. Representatives from H-E-B and the American Heart Association, (AHA) will be hosting a Heart Healthy Store Tour for heart disease survivors. San Antonio Food Bank Registered Dietician Felicita Bernier led the store tour and educated participants on the foods and products that make for heart healthy diet. During the tour, San Antonians were challenged to do their part to raise awareness about heart disease — the number one killer of women in Bexar County and the nation. In Bexar County, heart disease has claimed the lives of nearly 2,600 residents in 2006-2007. More than half of those deaths were women. “H-E-B is strongly committed to the health and well-being of our customers and their families. We are proud to partner with the American Heart Association to support the 2008 Go Red campaign,” said Dya Campos, Director of Public Affairs for H-E-B. The American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women is a national awareness campaign that began in 2004 to empower women with knowledge about their risk for cardiovascular disease and motivate them to take charge of their heart-health. The campaign is sponsored locally by H-E-B. “As a vital member of the community, the American Heart Association is pleased to have H-E-B as the city wide sponsor of the Go Red For Women Campaign Through this partnership, AHA and H-E-B can effectively inform consumers of their heart healthy options when shopping for the family,” states Sandy Levy, Director of Communications for the South Central Affiliate of the American Heart Association. Continued Levy, “According to recent AHA data, 1 in 3 women will suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, therefore making tours such as this critical to our outreach efforts.” H-E-B is presenting an opportunity to its customers to support the American Heart Association each time a grocery purchase is made. Beginning today, tear pads with coupons in the denominations of $1, $3 and $5 will be located at the check stands of all H-E-B stores. The full amount of the donation then goes to the American Heart Association.
