H-E-B TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS SETS NEW RECORD AND RAISES $4.5 MILLION FOR TEXAS NON-PROFITS   

SAN ANTONIO , TX – June 06, 2008 –With the conclusion of a three-day tournament of events that saw more than 1,400 H-E-B vendors and suppliers take to tennis courts and golf courses across
San Antonio, the 2008 H-E-B Tournament of Champions has set a new standard – raising $4.5 million for Texas non-profits. This is a record-breaking and significant increase from last year’s tournament.

Now in its 23rd year, the H-E-B Tournament of Champions was created to provide an opportunity for vendors, who supply H-E-B with products and services, to get actively involved in supporting community organizations across Texas. More than 170 Texas non-profits will benefit from the proceeds raised by this year ’s tournament. The funds are distributed throughout the year to support initiatives focused on youth, children and education.  

“The Tournament of Champions is an important part of our community outreach,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Tournament of Champions Charitable Trustee. “We thank our vendors, suppliers and supporters for making this year’s tournament extremely successful. Their efforts ensure that various community initiatives will continue to benefit Texas families.”  

Among the tournament’s beneficiaries is Special Olympics of Texas. The tournament began in 1986 as a way to raise much-needed funds for this organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for persons with special needs.

The first year featured 14 suppliers playing on one course and contributing $38,000. In succeeding years, as the tournament grew, financial gifts to other non-profits were made possible. Today, there are 448 contributing companies, 1,400 golfers on six courses and 60 tennis players. Since its inception in 1985, the tournament has raised $33.3 million for more than 625 Texas non-profits.
